Fascia Pain Treatment in West Delhi: Expert Insights on Chronic Conditions and Treatment

The human body is an intricate web of connective tissue known as fascia. The fascia envelopes muscles, bones, and organs. Initially fascia was considered an inert layer and not responsible for any pain perception or propagation in chronic pain conditions. However as research in the subject of chronic pain and pain generators advanced and intensified, understanding improved about fascia in human body.

Fascia’s mechanical properties in terms of elastic strength and mobility were known for long but later on contribution of biochemical changes in generating and propagating pain came to forefront. Fascia was found to be rich in nociceptors (pain receptors) and milieu (level of pro inflammatory cytokines and immune cells) within the fascia were important determinants of pain.

Let me explain the role of fascia as a primary pain generator in various chronic pain states.

  • Nerve entrapments : thickened and tight fascia leads to decrease in space between fascial layers (usually nerves are present in these fascial layers) contributing to nerve entrapments and symptoms like burning, tingling, numbness and pins and needles. This is commonly seen in hands as carpal tunnel syndrome and in foot as tarsal tunnel syndrome. Such entrapments may mimic neuropathic pain and lead to prolonged morbidity.
  • Chronic postsurgical pain: the adhesions formed during healing of fascial tissue after any surgery can sometimes lead to continuous pain in the scar and also entrap small nerves leading to neuropathic pain
  • Neck and upper back pain : due to poor posture and bad ergonomics, the fascia in the neck and upper back gets stretched leading to compression of muscles beneath like trapezius and sternocleidomastoid. This generates severe dull aching pain in patient’s neck and a tight feeling extending upto shoulder and arms. Sometimes this even causes pain inside ear and severe headaches. If left untreated, this fascial pain can even lead to disc bulge and facetalarthropathy of lower cervical region over few years.
  • Buttock pain and leg pain: tight fascia in gluteal region due to prolonged sitting and poor posture can lead to compression of sciatic nerve in this region. Often patients complain of difficulty sitting or lying down on affected side. This leads to sciatica type pain in thighs and legs. This is called piriformis syndrome or sub gluteal syndrome.
  • Myofascial pain syndrome: hypersensitive points develop in fascia and muscles that can refer pain to distant sites. These are called trigger points. This chronic pain state is generally very poorly responsive to usual painkillers like NSAID’s and opioids.

Expert Treatment for Fascia Pain

Since fascia as a pain generator is poorly recognized by most physicians, its effective treatment is generally available only with well trained pain physicians. Dr Ekta’s Pain management clinic provides effective longlasting fascia pain treatment in West Delhi. The modalities available include:

  • Nerve blocks and hydrodissection: Perineuralhydrodissection and dissecting the fascial layers with prolotherapy solutions, 5% Dx solution and saline solution amongst others helps to block the increased nociceptors and also clear the inflammatory soup spread in the fascial layers. These procedures must be performed under ultrasound guidance as accurate needle location is of paramount importance.
  • Myofascial release: Gentle release of fascial tightening is also effective in early cases.
  • Glucopuncture : This a newer technique to take care of the strained fascia mainly because of poor posture and ergonomics. This has been especially useful in patients with neck pain and trapezius spasm. This may need some repeat sessions but avoids long term use of harmful medicines without compromising on work time.
